Pain is a response or signal that is sent to your brain to alert you to an actual or potential damage occurring inside the body. Pain tells us that something is not quite right. Pain can be experienced as mild to severe, occasional, pulsating (throbbing) or constant, acute (short-lived) or chronic (long term). Pain can be felt as a result of many things including: Injuries to various parts of the body, diseases such as arthritis, cancer and heart attack, child birth, various surgeries such as amputation, infections and trauma, inflammatory conditions such as bursitis, burns, tension and stress. When you feel pain, the first step to take is to determine the cause of the pain. The underlying cause of pain can be determined with various diagnostic procedures such as a physical examination, neurological examination and various imaging tests such as X-rays and MRI scans. Determining the cause of pain is the most important step in pain management and providing effective treatment to alleviate pain.

University Pain Centers (UPC) specializes in the treatment of pain conditions disorders such as degenerative disc disease, small disc herniations, neck and back pain, post-surgical pain, cancer pain, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, post-herpetic neuralgia, as well as other painful conditions. While certain pain conditions can be improved with one or two treatment modalities, many require an individualized multi-modal regimen that includes medical procedures and medications, coupled with psychological support and physical therapy, to alleviate pain and its consequences. Through the use of the Center’s expert multidisciplinary team approach, we are able to provide treatment that enables patients to become more productive and improve their quality of life. Our UPC physicians are experts in the treatment of these conditions and have extensive experience in the injection of medications at specific locations of the spine, joints, peripheral nerves, and soft tissues which are done to treat pain syndromes, or for diagnosis of the problem that might contribute to the pain you are experiencing. Moreover, the UPC physician and staff encourage patients to discuss the treatment options available for their conditions and to ask questions about those procedures.
